The serial on this handsome Elgin watch dates it to 1949 and it is in surprisingly good condition for its age! The 10k RGP case (25.5mm excluding the crown) is in fine condition, with very little age wear. The pale cream dial has a few minor imperfections, as you'd expect of a 77 year old watch. The gold leaf hands match the gold tone of the case with a small second hand beneath. The reflective gold Breguet numerals look great beneath the hand ground and polished crystal. The crown has plenty of grip and it winds and sets effortlessly.
The caseback is in very fine condition and it snaps tightly to the case, as it should. Inside, the workhorse Elgin 554 movement keeps time accurately, with a healthy amplitude and minimal beat error. The Elgin comes on brand new 16mm lizard grain leather bands that accent the case hue nicely. Overall, this Elgin is a classic example of late War Years American style; it would look great peeking out from beneath a sweater or on full display with a rolled up cuff.
